Fishing Derby

The third Marvin Wyse Memorial Fishing Derby was held at the 2004 Friendship Days festival on Saturday June 24. The weather was perfect for this summers event and the fish were biting. Fifty-five catfish were caught by park anglers over a three hour period. The largest of the catfish weighed in at 5 lbs.

At the festival in 2002, only one fish came out of the pond. Organizer Courtney Miller decided to stock catfish in 2004 thinking they would be less affected by temperature changes than the trout at the previous derby. Switching to catfish made a big difference in the catch for 2004. Volunteers assisted fishermen by filleting their catch- and were kept very busy.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources also helped support the event and awarded younger anglers rods and reels for winning their age brackets.
